Drug Uses
Mextil is used for treatment of certain types of life–threatening irregular heartbeat.

How Taken
Use Mextil as directed by your doctor. Take Mextil with a meal or antacids. Take Mextil regularly to receive the most benefit from it. Taking Mextil at the same time each day will help you remember to take it.

Warnings/Precautions
Before taking Mextil, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances, if you are allergic to any ingredient in Mextil, if you have other heart problems (eg, heart block or AV block, conductions problems), congestive heart failure, or a pacemaker, if you have low blood pressure, liver problems, or a seizure disorder, if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or are breast–feeding. If you become pregnant while taking Mextil, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Mextil during pregnancy. Mextil is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast–feed while taking Mextil. Some medicines may interact with Mextil. Therefore tell your doctor of all prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement that you are taking. Do not take Mextil if you have cardiogenic shock or second– or third–degree atrioventricular (AV) block and do not have a pacemaker. Do not suddenly stop taking Mextil without checking with your doctor. Before you have any medical or dental treatments, emergency care, or surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are using Mextil. Lab tests, including liver and heart function, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments. Mextil should be used with extreme caution in children. Safety and effectiveness have not been confirmed.

Missed Dose
If you miss a dose take it as soon as you remember. However if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the Missed Dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Possible Side Effects
Some of the Possible Side Effects are– Blurred vision, clumsiness, constipation, diarrhea, dizziness or lightheadedness, headache, heartburn, incoordination, nausea, nervousness, stomach discomfort, tremor, vomiting. Contact your doctor if any of these or other side effects occur. If you experience any of the following serious side effects, you should seek medical attention immediately– allergic reactions (rash, hives, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue), blurred vision or other vision problems, chest pain, fainting, fever, irregular, fast, or slow heartbeat, severe dizziness or lightheadedness, severe stomach pain, sore throat, yellowing of the skin or eyes.

Storage
Store Mextil bellow 86 °F (15 to 30 °C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Mextil out of the reach of children.

Overdose
If overdose is suspected seek medical attention immediately. Some of the symptoms of Mextil overdose are– coma, fainting, heart attack, seizures, severe dizziness or lightheadedness, severe nausea and vomiting, severe slow or irregular heartbeat, unusual numbness or tingling.

More Information
Mextil may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or blurred vision. These effects may worsen if Mextil is taken with alcohol or certain other medications. Use Mextil with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to this drug. If your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen, contact your doctor. Mextil should be used only by the patient for whom it has been prescribed. Do not take less or more or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
